Chubby Chick Potchefstroom Shooting: Owner Jonathan Fourie Died, Brother Deon critically injured

 

POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa — Tragedy struck Potchefstroom on Monday morning as two brothers from the well-known Fourie family, owners of the popular fried chicken brand Chubby Chick, were shot at their business premises. Jonathan Fourie was fatally shot, while his brother, Deon Fourie, remains in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. at Luitingh Street in the Potch Industrial Area. Police confirmed that a 73-year-old suspect had met with the brothers at their business location when, according to reports, he allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire. Emergency medical services pronounced Jonathan Fourie dead at the scene, while Deon was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

During the shooting, security personnel at Chubby Chick reportedly heard the gunfire and responded by firing at the suspect. The 73-year-old sustained injuries and was also hospitalized, where he remains under police guard.

The Fourie brothers were prominent figures in the Potchefstroom community, actively involved with the Potch-Dorp Rugby Club and known for their contributions to local business and civic life.

The Potchefstroom police have launched an investigation into the case, treating it as murder and attempted murder. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

This shocking attack has sent ripples through the local community, where the Fourie family has long been regarded as influential entrepreneurs and community supporters.
