ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A 45-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday morning during an altercation in the parking lot of a South Anchorage sports complex, authorities said. The incident involved parents of youth soccer players at the Fox Hollow Golf Course & Sports Dome on Brayton Drive.
The suspect identified as Luke Charles Simonson, 36, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and third-degree assault, according to an initial charging document filed in Anchorage District Court on Sunday. Police have not yet publicly released the name of the man who was killed.
According to court documents, the incident began when the mother of a young soccer player yelled at Simonson after he nearly struck her child with his pickup truck. The boy’s father approached Simonson to confront him about the near-accident, leading to a verbal confrontation.

Around 11:45 a.m., Anchorage police began receiving multiple 911 calls about a shooting in the parking lot. An off-duty officer who was nearby heard gunfire and saw Simonson holding a handgun while the victim lay in front of his truck with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Witnesses, including the victim’s wife and children, told police that Simonson “looked for a fight” before the shooting occurred. Dashboard camera footage reviewed by police reportedly shows the victim walking toward Simonson’s pickup, at which point Simonson got out with a gun drawn and shot the man multiple times.
Simonson told police that he had been waiting in his truck for his wife and young daughter to finish soccer practice. He said he keeps a handgun in the console of his truck and carries it whenever he returns to the vehicle. Simonson claimed he felt threatened when the victim approached, although he did not see the man with a weapon. He admitted to firing multiple times during the confrontation.
Police took Simonson into custody at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing video evidence and witness statements.
No additional details about the victim or the upcoming court proceedings were immediately available. Anchorage police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
