Eastern Illinois University in Charleston was placed on lockdown early Monday following reports of shots fired near campus, according to university officials.
The school issued an emergency alert, urging students, faculty and staff to shelter in place. The message warned the campus community to avoid the affected area while law enforcement responded.
Charleston Police and Eastern Illinois University Police are currently on scene. No injuries have yet been confirmed, and officials have not released details about a suspect.
Students reported receiving text and email alerts instructing them to remain indoors and lock doors. Surrounding streets near campus have been temporarily restricted as officers conduct their search and investigation.
