Beloved Maple Ridge Coach Martin Hak Killed in Car Accident; Community in Mourning.
MAPLE RIDGE, B.C. — The Maple Ridge sports community is grieving the loss of Martin Hak, a respected ice hockey coach who was killed in a vehicle collision on November 9, 2025. Hak, born March 23, 1977, was 48 years old.
The crash occurred Saturday night, prompting the closure of 128 Avenue between Laity Street and 216 Street. Police, fire, and emergency medical crews responded to what witnesses described as a severe collision. The road remained blocked for several hours as investigators worked at the scene. Authorities have not yet released further details on the cause of the crash.
Hak was best known for his role within local hockey organizations, where he served as a mentor, leader, and friend. The Ridge Meadows Flames Hockey Club, where Hak was an assistant coach for the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons, confirmed his passing and issued a heartfelt tribute.
“The Ridge Meadows Flames are deeply saddened and heartbroken to hear of the tragic passing of Martin Hak,” the organization wrote. “Hakker was hugely instrumental in helping guide us to back-to-back championships. He made all of us better because of his positive attitude, his kindness, and his big heart. He was more than a coach — he was a brother. Martin, you were the best of the best, and your legacy will live on forever. Martin Hak – Forever a Flame.” 
Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball also expressed condolences, calling Hak a “local legend” and extending support to the hockey community as it mourns. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Hak’s family and friends,” the organization wrote.
The Richmond Sockeyes Junior “A” Hockey Club, where Hak previously coached, also remembered him as a mentor and dedicated contributor. “His dedication to the team and the community will never be forgotten,” the club said. “Forever a Sockeye.”
Hak was recognized for his enthusiasm, generosity, and the ability to lift the spirits of those around him. Fellow coaches and players described him as someone who always put others first and helped shape not only athletes but also young people learning to grow within the sport.
The impact of his loss is being felt across the broader hockey community in the Lower Mainland and beyond.
